Lake Level: 739.4
Lake Temperature: mid to lower 80s degrees F

Water levels are much higher than they have been in the past couple of years. Bass fishing has slowed due to fish moving to deeper summertime habitat. A few fish are being caught deep using a variety of plastic baits. Additionally, a few fish are being caught on points and bluff walls with deep diving crankbaits. Watch for hybrid striped bass and white jumps early and late in the day as they are feeding on shad.

White bass frenzy on the flats

July 24, 2009 by admin · 4 Comments

By Chris Poore
If you’ve never experienced it, you’ll think someone is messing with you.

You’re alone in your boat on one of the hottest days of the year. The water is still. Then, a splash behind you. You turn and find only ripples. Next, a kerplunk in front of you. You look to shore in search of rock-throwing kids. Nothing. You look up for the birds that must be making a bombing run on your fishing trip.

Fishing guide Rodney Hairgrove showed off a typical white bass. He and a client each caught the 15-fish limit within 2 hours on Kentucky Lake.

Striped bass sometimes gather with their smaller white bass cousins to mob baitfish in what’s called the jumps. On Kentucky Lake, boats line up at Eureka Flats during the summer to take advantage.
Before you know it, you look down again and the water’s boiling all around you. And you begin to see the culprits: white bass.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Ky Dam – 358.36 Surface Temperature – 80
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam – 358.25 Surface Temperature – 80

Both lakes are nearing one foot below summer pool. The cold front that passed through the lakes area last weekend combined with another cold front that moved through the area on Tuesday cooled the water temperatures by 4-5 degrees. We are now have water temperatures that are about 6 degrees cooler than normal for this time of year. The Largemouth Bass bite on the ledges slowed somewhat this week with the frontal passages but some good fish are still being taken, just not as many. As mentioned in last week’s report, the better ledge bite has been in late morning and during the afternoon/evening hours when current is present. The ledge bite continues to be somewhat slow in the morning hours. The cooler water temperatures though has seemed to increase the bite on secondary points and associate creek channel banks in the creeks and bays where Largemouth are feeding on schools of shad fry. Most of the fish being taken on this pattern are smaller fish but some good one and two fish catches have been reported, especially early and late in the day. The weather forecast for the coming weekend is for a chance of isolated thunderstorms on Saturday with southwest winds around 15-17 mph. Sundays forecast indicates lighter west winds and a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Boaters venturing on the lakes this weekend, especially on Saturday should keep and eye on the sky for approaching storms and be prepared to seek safe shelter.

Frankfort, Ky. – The record stood unchallenged eight years, until a northern Kentucky angler dunked it in mid-June. On July 25 and 26, “Kentucky Afield” television offers the details on the new state record grass carp.

What took a half-hour to reel to shore proved worth the struggle for Robert Marsh of Erlanger. Today, his name is among an elite group – state record fish holders. His grass carp tipped the scales at 58½ pounds, besting by a full 3 pounds the previous record established in 2001. Marsh appears on Kentucky Afield this weekend to talk about what was going through his mind for that 30 minutes that will now last a lifetime.

Cave Run Lake fishing report — KDFWR — July 23

July 23, 2009 by admin · Comments Off

Lake level: 730.3
Lake temperature: 75.2 degrees F

The water temperature at the lake is 3 to 4 degrees cooler than what has been experienced in the last couple of weeks so daytime fishing for largemouth bass may prove to be somewhat more successful.  Largemouth bass are being caught off the deep side of weed beds on shaky heads and plastic worms.  A few good size smallmouth bass in the 5 to 6 pound range have been caught along rocky banks by anglers using wacky worms.  Smallmouth bass make up about 7% of the black bass population and are mainly found in the lower main lake section.  Channel catfish are still being caught in the tailwater area with chicken livers being the bait of choice.

Barren River Lake fishing report — KDFWR — July 23

Hybrid bite has been excellent in lower end of lake trolling flukes or shad colored crankbaits. Bass good early, late & at night with large (10″ plus) texas, carolina, or shakeyhead rigged worms. Jug fishing & still fishing for channel catfish near rocky banks or flats near the river channel starting to heat up as their spawning season is wrapping up. Good success being had on jugs or still fishing with cutbait, liver or nightcrawlers. Tailwater activity for hybrids & catfish will be good as lake discharges will be up for awhile due to recent rains.

Kentucky Lake fishing report — KDFWR — July 23

Fishing the ledges at Kentucky Lake is good for catfish and bass.  If there is some current, that just makes things better.  I have heard a few reports of anglers catching keeper size crappie out deep on ledges using minnows.  For catfish some preferred baits are cut shad, live shad, large minnows, Catalpa worms, night crawlers, and leeches.  For bass, the carolina rigged worm is best.  I like one that has a dark colored body with a brighter color tail.  If you just want to catch any size bass, try fishing along the shoreline where you see schools of shad minnows.  As the lake level falls, some weed beds should start showing.  Fishing top water baits around and over the weed beds will produce some exciting bass fishing.  Anglers fishing at night are catching some smallmouth bass off rocky points along the Land Between the Lakes shoreline, and gravel bars.  You might also pick up a few sauger.  Fishing around docks should be good for those anglers fishing for sunfish (bluegill), as the dock provide a good shady spot on a bright sunny day.
